Sunroof drain hoses
There are lot of reasons why you would have water in the trunk of your CRX. One of them is the sunroof drain hoses. The Si models came with the sunroof. There are total of four drain hoses from the sunroof. One on each corner. Two are routed through the a-pillar, ends up somewhere inside the front fenders, and drains out behind the front wheels. So far so good. The two rear hoses are routed along the c-pillar (along the lines of the rear hatch) through the trunk area and drains out behind the rear wheels. Pretty straight forward set-up except that the rear hoses are NOT one continuous hose.
I have no idea why some dude thought it was a good idea to have two connecting hoses and have them meet inside the trunk area right behind the wheel well. The upper hose is thinner than the lower so that its end is inserted into the lower hose to create the continuous drain. But this is where they come apart because they didn’t make the hoses long enough! Few more inches of upper hose would have kept them securely connected. Now they almost butt against each other end to end. I’m sure the hoses have shrunk over the years, but the dude should have thought about that in the beginning.
What happens once they come apart? The water no longer drains out under the car but sits in your trunk behind the wheel wells. I believe this also works to accelerate the famous Honda “rear wheel arch rust”. Honda is usually good at little details but this is one that’s utterly stupid. So if your CRX came with a factory sunroof, check each corner of your trunk behind the rear wheel well. Make sure those two hoses are tightly connected. And even if they are connected now, I’d duct tape them real good.

not a response about drainage, but a question about sunroofs. my 86 si has to be pushed up from the inside of the car at the back of it to open. it also scratches the roof when it goes back. and feels loose from the inside. any idea how i can fix this?
yeah, that is a common problem among these sunroofs. First of all, ‘feeling loose’ is sort of normal. They’re all like that.
I sometimes had to push my sunroof panel out with my hand to make it move. But once I kept using the sunroof regularly that problem went away.
But I did have the sunroof get stuck mid-way at one point. I had to remove the entire sunroof assembly and re-grease all the moving parts. But let me tell you, it could get really hairy. There are so many moving parts in there and you have to memorize the exact order of how the parts came out in order to put them back on. This is a good entire day’s work and definitely not for mechanically challenged.
But if you’re up to it, go for it. I’d say the most important thing apart from greasing all the moving joints is to remove the main cable (that pulls the roof panel) out from its casing and re-grease it. You’ll see that the original grease is old and powderized.
thats good info. thanks, i’ll probobly wait till i get it painted to mess with it, cause its not that big of a problem really. ok, this has nothing to do with sunroofs, but what interior door parts are compatible with 86 crx si. the part of the door that you grab to close it is broken at the top. you have a pic of what looks like the same thing on that red acura door pic. is that a match?
The interior door lock and the latch match between 86-87 Integra and 86-87 CRX. But the armrest/door pull probably won’t match. The CRX armrest looks much longer towards the back.
I need to know how to take my sunroof out with out damaging the roof…
oh its an 1987 honda crx si
The sunroof comes out(down) from the inside of the car. Sunroof has to be in closed position before removing it.
– First, remove all the interior trim pieces around the door window, quarter glass. (basically all those plastic trims pieces around the headliner)
– Remove rear view mirror
– Remove rubber trim around the sunroof (inside ceiling)
– You may have to remove the side interior plastics in the trunk to be able to remove quarter glass trims
– Remove coat hangers, grab handles, and dome light
– Remove headliner. Now you can see the sunroof/motor assembly
– There should be 8 or so 10mm bolts holding up the roof. (I believe, 3 in the front, 3 in the back, and 2 on each side if I remember correctly)
– Unplug the wire that powers the sunroof motor
– Remove the bolts and slowly – very slowly – lower the roof assembly. You may need your friend to help you when you do this. The sunroof assembly is damn heavy! Not kidding. You need to support the sunroof assembly while you are removing the bolts in order to prevent the roof collapsing on you.
oh ok so do u know were i could get a new one? and or can i just get one from pick n pull but what year would match up to my 87 crx si? hahaha ok and one more thing man i got a problem with the clutch but different people say different thing eh so i really dont know the honda dealer ship says oh ur clutch is fucked and my uncle oh yea just get the clutch spring so i dont really know the clutch cable is loose from the fram going to the peddle i think and when i push in the clutch peddle it has no tention i know when i bought the guy the guy said it was just the spring so i dont know…
thanks for the info on the sunroof
Or since the clutch cable is loose would i just have to tighten the cable cuase see i just talked to a buddie and hes not sure but dont know if there is a spring that goes to were the clutch peddle is?
Sunroof – some dealers may still have old parts (check the resource/links section here hondaautomotiveparts.com) but unless you know which parts is exactly wrong with your sunroof, it won’t help. Pick and pull is probably the best bet. 86 and 87 sunroof will match. Not sure if 85 came with sunroofs. But if they did, most likely they’ll match, too. (1988+ will not match)
Clutch – your clutch cable is connected directly from the pedal to the transmission. There is no spring along the way. But there is an adjustment knob/nut right where the cable connects to the trans. Check these first:
1. check if the cable is connected to the pedal
2. check where the cable passes through the firewall. There should be a fitting that holds cable to the firewall.
3. check/adjust the knob where the cable connect to transmission. This becomes loose over time. This can be found right on top of the trans under the hood. 12 and 13th photo on this page shows that knob:
http://crx1.com/wp/integra-motor-d16a1-browntop/swap-week-6/
Other than those check points, more serious problem could be the clutch release spring or the pressure plate. Let’s hope that’s not the case because you have to remove the transmission if those are the problem.
Ok will check for that. but for the sun roof will any 86 honda work like civic i would think almost be the same wouldnt it? or does it have to be CRX cuase i know last weekend i went and the pick n pull here in alberta didnt have any CRX. accords and civics and other one.
im probley a pain in your ass right now but this is only my 2nd car iv worked on 1 one was a chevy sprint but never went to well hahaha any way my right head light on the CRX got smashed out and i got a new one. i would have to take the whole bumper off to get at it eh cuase theres a bolt on the top and springs on the bottom of the light and iv been trying to take it out with out taken my bumper off. i cant do to much with that car since it is snowing out here and the garage is not mine its a family members and they have so much junk in there.
anyway thank man for ur help got to call for a windshield

Only the CRX sunroofs will fit. Not Accord or anything else. Civic sunroofs are not power. Only CRX ones.
ok thank you for your help man..
having a hell of a time removing flywheel bolts (12pt, 17mm). motor is still in the car. when i try to loosen them, the motor twists and socket want to slip off (the bolt heads are very short). i don’t want to damage motor mounts , and don’t want to bloody my knuckles. is there something i can do? or just borrow an impact wrench? they are not reverse threaded are they?
what are you trying to do? ru removing the trans for clutch job? those bolt are not reverse thread.
ya, swapping transmissions , bearings are shot in old one. got one with 148,000 miles on it for 150. got old tranny out, but those bolts are frikkin ON THERE!!. torqued to 87 lbs, but with 23 years of heat and cooling, they are tough. pretty sure i’m gonna have to find an impact wrench. do you have any experience with electric ones? supposed to have 280 lbs force. cause i don’t have an air compressor for an air model
also, i put in a new clutch 2 months ago. and put old tranny back on not knowing it was bad. so here i’m wrestling with it again. i didn’t have flywheel turned then. bad mistake. because the new clutch slips like crazy (thats what i get for cutting corners). so this time i’m going all the way in the hopes of not having to disassemble again for a long time. i do have a minor concern about the new clutch disk being prematurely worn, but its only been 2 months of limited driving. and i drive it in a manner that it doesn’t slip (accelerate nice and easy). but still would like to know what thickness the flywheel face of the clutch should look like. hate it if i have to buy yet another new clutch disk. but i will if i need to . cause like i said, 2 drivetrain fixes in 2 months is enough. got any pics of what a good clutch disk should look like (thickness that is). thanks dudes
that bolt is going to be tough without impact. rule of thumb when changing clutch is always resurface the flywheel, get new pressure plate, and also a good idea to change clutch release spring.
ya, borrowed a compressor, and got an impact wrench on the way. gonna git ‘er dun the righ way this time.
hey just wondering if you can tell me or even if u have a pic to show me were the spark plug wires was told they have to be in order…..
i can snap a pic of sparkplug wires if you still need to know. mines a stock motor 86 crx si.
sounds good but i need to know how they go from spark plugs cause i took them off and then forgot lol how to put them in the right order and then went to start car and wouldnt start
I sent you an email with diagrams. Didn’t you get it?
i got the diagrams but it dont really show what order the sprak plug wires go in from sprak plugs to distributor like i got one small spark plug wire and one a little bit longer and the rest longer.. i was told they have to go in order?
and lol its to small to read i can barley see the writing sorry
Here I posted the diagram:

Hope this helps.
OK, got a new question. my PGM-FI light has been coming and staying on lately. also the engine idle goes up and down slightly and motor studders slightly going down the road. i’m going to change fuel filter soon, but could it be anything else. its bitter cold here in NC lately. but it does this when the engine is warmed up. any idea? what is proper maintnance for FI system?
It could be a number of things. ECU, O2 sensor, MAP sensor, throttle angle sensor, etc…
I’d check the code flashing on the ECU first. The computer is located under the passenger seat. There is a series of LED light on the side for indication code.
Check this link for code description.

do you knw if there is a switch for the clutch and if so were?
There is no switch for the clutch. There’s only cable running from pedal to the transmission.
got some rusty floorpan on drivers side (maybe both sides). do they offer a replacement piece or should i just fabricate one? any idea of price for the factory replacement and is it a partial piece or the entire floor piece?
nope, no panels out there. we’re on our own.
Could you clarify where the hoses connect in the cab? Also I’d like to know what I have to pull out to access the hoses, my Haynes book did not have any illustrations that were of use.
Wow, finally a comment/question that is actually about the sunroof! =)

Point your finger on the rear quarter panel around where it meets the tip of the rear bumper (the red area on the pic)
Now, on the inside of the trunk, the tube connection is right where your finger is pointing. If you have small and nimble hands, you can probably get to it through tail light service opening. But most likely you’ll have to remove the trim panels both rear and side inside the trunk.
So, I’m pretty sure I followed the instructions correctly, but I want to describe the process to make sure that I was correct (because I still have water in my trunk soaking into my sound proofing around the spare tire area).
I removed the interior panel that covers the top of the wheel well, the part that comes up to a point. On the same side, I remove the rear access panel -the ones that have no screws holding them in place. With these two panels open, I reach back between the back end of the wheel well and the tail lights. I felt a hose that just plugged into a port. No lock or anything to unscrew. Just a big clear tube into a larger diameter port.
I made sure that the tube was plugged into it’s port and then wrapped tape around the top of the port also in contact with the tube to keep them in place.
Is this the correct place to tape? If it is, are there other common places for water ingress into the trunk space of a CRX? [Honda Civic CRX Si 1986]
You did the right thing by taping up those tubes, because they do come off if left alone. With that out of the way, there still are number of causes for water in the trunk.
Some that I know of are:
- through taillight gasket
- third brake light bolt gasket (in the hatch glass)
- through the bad glass/weatherstrip contact toward the back of the door
But most common out of these is the failure of foam gaskets on back of the tail lamps. These are the foamy stuff between the taillights and the body. Over the years, these become almost powderized and can no longer dispel water. What happens is the rain from the tailgate gutter runs down the sides and end up around the top of the taillights. And if the gasket (the foamy stuff) is bad, the water just flows right into the trunk through the taillight opening.
(to test, open your trunk, pour some water on top of the taillamps right on the gap between the body and the taillamp)
Last time I checked, Honda stopped making these gaskets. If you can find one oem or aftermarket, that’s great. If you can’t find one, you have to make them on your own. That’s what I did. I just went to the Home Depot and got some pipe insulation foams. Get the more denser one for more protection against leaks. Also, get the largest circumference you can get to make sure they are wide enough for the taillights’ back. Also, make sure they are thick enough for a gasket.
Just make sure when you remove the old ones, try not to damage or tear them apart because you’re going to use them as a template. Trace the shape and location of the holes on a thick cardboard and cut out a template. Use it to cut out identical shapes from the pipe insulation. It will be kinda tricky because pipe insulation is all curled up from being round. But once they are pressed between the taillight and the body, they work like a charm.
This trick worked for me for 2 years and counting. Good luck.
i’m gonna sell my 86 crx si. black with black int. new tranny, clutch, cv joints, front struts, radiator, motor runs great. bone stock and very dependable. only selling to get a larger 4 door car (maxima). make offer. i can send pics to anyone interested. email me at wpthree@hotmail.com
Maybe you could edit the page subject title Sunroof drain hoses | CRX1.COM to more generic for your subject you create. I liked the the writing still.
Looking for help stopping leaks (and fixing horn, door latch, etc) on my 1987 CRX Si. If you’ve ever seen me around Seattle, it’s the black one with the huge orange/green tribal-psychedelic face painted on the front. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/lbg/2359558472.html
What a kick ass site!
